Worst Hiring Stories

I post positive stories from my experience but let me for a change post something really NEGATIVE. I made an offer to someone. He accepted. His notice period is 3 months. At the end of 3 months his recruiter calls, very apologetic. He says the candidate took the counter offer. People who do that screw everyone up. Their recruiter, recruiter's reputation, not to mention well deserved commission. The hiring manager and the team. Worse, they screw up other candidates who may be no less qualified but in an urgent need of a job. Even worse, they screw up themselves- counter offers never really work. All the reasons why they went looking for the job are still there: lack of appreciation, micromanagement, mistreatment, lack of growth, etc. None of us really work just for the money. Be kind to others. Be kind to yourself. Agree ?

Resume Guideline if you are applying for job as a Freshers.

If you are a fresher and looking out for a job, then this blog going to be very useful for you.

 Few guidelines for job hunter.
1.
When you are approaching a person to referral , first go through his/her profile,  knowing a person is very important for any communication. I have seen people calling " Bro , Dude "  for a request to refer him in his/her organization. Respect corporate culture.

2.
After graduation, your resume is the one which is having all info about you and it is the first approach for the recruiter to decide for a call. Your resume should be good enough , see below the resume guidelines.

3.
Your resume is very precious, do not throw it blindly. Go through JD to understand what you are applying to.

4.
Do a research, see the Job description , think about it and then apply it.
People used to do opposite, they first apply the job, then think on it .. then go for Job description. If you know what a particular job needed, you can highlight that in your resume. One strong application is far better than 100 weak applications.

5.
Cover letter is very important , this should be the one where you can describe yourself in brief. Not many recruiters open your resume and see what you have for them .. Cover letter should not be lengthy and should be having point to point information, where ever you are applying , this should be included by default. It would be good if you put the referral person's name/ Recruiter's name instead of Sir/Madam.

6.
When sending a email, DO not just attach the resume and send it thinking it's recruiters job to open the mystery box to see the hidden treasure. There is nothing like that and your resume will miss an opportunity for you.  When sending an email , you can type few things so that your email should not be look like forwarded one. This is important.
An email should never sent without it's subject and contents.

7.
Your email's content should be proper and should be having point to point information. Put all the information which is required to submit your resume in system for a particular position.

8.
Think about the recruiter/interviewer , to get shortlisted, you should be having good /proper resume , a nice cover letter and proper communication (by email) , If you are not getting shortlisted again and again means there is some issue ...either with you or in the process you follow to apply for an opportunity.

Below are the resume guideline which I think everyone of us should follow. Put your comments if you like this page.

Resume Guideline:

1.
Save your resume with your name , exp  and your domain.
Your name/surname should start with capital letter , this is very important to follow. For example- your name is  test , exp - 2 yrs , domain is embedded , then your resume name should be Test_2yrs_Embedded.pdf .
Do not save your resume with my_resume.pdf, name_new.pdf , name_1.pdf ...  there is nothing in system called my_resume.
This is the first impression when a recruiter look for your resume. Always follow the Capital letter approach.

2.
Do not try to make your resume lengthy.
People think if the resume is lengthy , recruiter/interviewer may think .. wow.. what a candidate, he has done so much of work, instead he/she will loose interested in your resume and may call you off  and ask to go without asking much.

3.
Neat and Clean.
Keep your resume neat and clean, all information should be crisp and clear.

4.

Format.
There are many format available online , you can choose any one but should be good enough to transfer the information to recruiter and interviewer.
You can put your aim, education , education projects, extra activities , few lines about you and your disclaimer.
DO NOT PUT YOUR DOB in resume, you can mention the year .. but date is not required until or unless it is asked. This is your personal information. I have seen people put passport number also which is not correct. Your resume will be accessible to thousands of people and anyone can take advantage. Not recommended to put the personal and confidential information on resume.

5.
Texting
Do not make many letters as bold letters, when there are so many bold letters , they loose their shine and treated as regular letters.

Thanks.

How to negotiate for the best when making a move from your present employer ?

Welcome to my blog.

If you are having an offer and thinking .. "Is this is best offer or yet to get best "  , then this blog is for you. I will take you step by step for salary negotiation.

Q. What are salary negotiations ?
Salary negotiations involve discussing a job offer with a prospective employer to negotiate a salary and benefits package that’s in line with the market (and hopefully, that meets or exceeds your needs).

Getting Prepared for it.

1. Know Your Value.
If you’re going to get the pay you deserve, it’s crucial to know the going rate for your position in your specific industry and in your geographic area. You need to do online research to know the current market rate.

2. Take what you are getting.
Life should be driven by you ... you should not be driven by life.
Few people think that they will take whatever comes in their career journey. They do not say "NO" for any Job opening. This attitude is not good for you and your company. Most of the time, you may regret joining new company. You need to know what you want from your potential company.
Take what you want , define your career goal, define your salary expectation and then work on it. You will get what actually you want.

3. Pick the Top one.
List down the company and location where you are looking for job change. Location play a major role as you might be having dependencies like your partner's job, child schooling , transportation, Facilities , etc

4. Avoid the Salary Requirements Trap
people to say: "I completely understand why this is an important issue -- you're trying to determine who you want to continue in this process, and it doesn't make much sense to pursue candidates you aren't going to get. Secondly, I know that the tendency is for people to lowball their salary range, because they don't want to get out of the pool. My preference is to figure out, independent of these issues, the degree to which there is a good fit here and the extent to which I can bring value to this organization and the extent to which I'm going to be fulfilled and involved and committed to this position. I suggest we wait to have the salary conversation until you're prepared to make an offer."

5. Avoid throwing up your numbers
This one is tricky part, you want to get your desired salary but at the same time, you dont want to disclose your numbers. This will required a lot of research and you are the only best person who know your value. Evaluate yourself and may be fix a salary level where you can start negotiating.
During interview, you can always says "Industry Standard" but at the same time, you need to give a hint to recruiter that you can looking salary in that range.
Each company has their own standard and targets and each job rack is defined in certain salary range, make sure you are in that salary range before initiating the hiring process, otherwise it will be waste of effort from your side as well as their side.

6. Be willing to walk away or consider saying no
When a company release the salary breakup / offer , and it is not matching with your expectation, you can say "no" to them. Some better offer might be waiting for you. You can always take your time and use that offer to fast process the job process which you actually want.

7. Negotiating Benefits
Almost every job offer will have variable pay which usually paid annually. Based on the company and job position , requirement, urgency to fill that job rack .. there are multiple factor you need to consider and if you are in strong position, you can ask to convert that variable amount paid monthly.
Take  in-hand as much as you can take it. You can also negotiate for joining bonus , stocks, and other benefits. Make sure you are in good position to negotiate .. even if you are not, you can always ask for it.

8. Take your time.
Sometime all you need is TIME,  once offer is release to you , you can take your time to respond. Review the salary breakup/ Tax calculation and make sure you are in your desired salary range.

9. Stay away in discussion of your previous salary history
Your present compensation should not be depend on your last compensation , if that is the case then there could be issues. In India, HR always need your previous salary slips and they made offer based on that. You have right to refuse to forward your current salary slip, remember , this could be not legal to share the details. You can tell them that you will submit the salary slip once you join the company.
If this is required to process your offer letter, you can give the salary breakup and remove your company name and other information .. remember you have signed a NDA with present employer and you are not suppose to discussion anything about the present employer.

10. Stay Positive, Not Pushy
Negotiation may be scary, but you should always keep the conversation on a positive note

Hope I have shared enough details , one can go through and share your feedback.
Your feedback is important , as it will tell if you are going on right track or not, please do not hesitate to put your words in comment.

Are you looking for job change ?

The best way to answer the interview question, “Why are you looking for a job change?” is to focus on positive reasons that are easy to explain.
Giving negative responses such as a nagging boss or work pressure should be avoided at any cost.

I am going to give you few tips which may help you to make your decision in choosing your next employer , your next job , etc.

There are few questions, and you are the best person to answer them , go through the each question and think about the best and honest answer.

Q1. Why are you not satisfy with your current employer ? List down the reasons or cause or whatever which motivating you to switch the job.

Q3. What is your salary expectation ? Are you under paid / over paid / balance paid ?

Q4. Are you prepared enough to face interview ?

Once you answer the questions, you will get to know what exactly you want from your current employer or next employer. There are certain limits where you can talk to current employer and resolve those issues, but you need to prove yourself to the company that your are worth to consider your demands.

the main motivation for the techie to switch the job is salary expectation ,  if that is the case you need to workout things like how much exactly you are earning and once you switch the job, what will be your expectation. You need to do market research a bit.
Each company has own salary structure and once they release the offer, you need to calculate the exact amount you are going to get in-hand.  You also need to make some assumption while doing that. I can hint you a few , like variable bonus , gratuity , PF , leaves encashment policy etc etc.

Below are the few best responses for "why are you looking for a job change at this point of time?"
First will summarize the bad reason.

What are the right reasons?

Let’s first understand what are the wrong reasons.

Following are the wrong reasons no hiring manager would like to hear:

“I am Leaving my previous employer because I am unable to perform under pressure.”

“I am having difficulty working relationships in the workplace.”

“I do not like my present boss.”

“My present Organisation is unable to give me a sufficient raise in salary that I desire.”

“I am changing the job because I do not stick to any job for more than few months.”

“I hate my present job, work and looking for enriching opportunity.”

“I want to move on because I didn’t get the raise in salary as expected.”

“I want to try out something new for fun.”

“There is a lot of internal politics in my present organisation and I am unable to bear that.”

“To honest HR policies are not sound in my present organisation.”

“The travel time to office is too much and I want my office to be just in a walking distance.”

Even if you have one or more of the real reasons mentioned above, none of the hiring managers will be impressed with such reasons.

All the above-mentioned reasons will go against your selection in Job.

You might have thoughts in mind “I am stating the Truth”.

Let me ask you a question. Change the situation now and think of yourself as an Interviewer.

“Would you like to hire someone who has stated any of the above-mentioned reasons?”

Just think for a second and answer yourself. If your answer is no, let’s go ahead.

Here are some thoughts for you to bring out the real answer for a Job change.

Can you think of a reason that is really positive for Job Change?

Are you looking at advancing your Career?

What is the Positive outcome of the work in your current Job that is serving as a trigger for the job change?

The ideal right answer should justify your working in the previous organisation followed by your interest in the new employer.

It is always said, “Read and study about the new Employer”. This research will give you insights about the striking point where the new opportunity and employer matches.

Before going for the interview, make a list of all the positives that you have in the current organisation that are genuine. You will talk about the positive things of the previous organisation, followed by the new opportunity.

What is something that is missing in the current organization and new opportunity is offering me that? Think and answer.

Those reasons could be:

To learn more in the given field.
Want to take more responsibilities to grow in career.
Need some fewer responsibilities for time being.
The desire to relocate to another city because of some personal reasons.
Want to gain a new skill.
Prefer shorter commute time to work.
Really need to maintain a work-life balance.

Based upon your reason here are some answers that could serve as one of the best reasons for job change:

1. To learn more in the given field

“My present organisation has entrusted me with a lot of challenging work opportunities that helped me to grow mentally and professionally. As your organization is the leader (better/best) in the domain, I want to learn and add more to my current skills.”

"I am interested in learning more and add new learnings to my current skills. The job opportunity in your organization is serving an opportunity to leverage my current areas of expertise and increase my skills."

2. Want to take more responsibilities to grow in career

“My current organisation has imparted managerial capabilities / (A lot of Skills) in me but the growth is limited as the company is relatively small. I am looking for an opportunity, where I can take more responsibilities. The current opportunity sounds promising in that direction and I am keen to go ahead.”

3. Need some fewer responsibilities for the time being

“My existing organisation has provided me with a lot of opportunities to grow as a person personally and professionally. I have been enjoying a lot of challenging work. As the upcoming role is focusing more on a particular domain only, this sounds good for future and career.”

4. The desire to relocate to another city because of some personal reasons

“The current organisation has taught me many things and helped to grow professionally in Career. As the upcoming opportunity in your organization is close to my place (Home / Native place / Desired City), I would be excited to go ahead with the new assignment.”

5. Want to gain a new skill

“I have been working in the current domain for quite a long period of time and enjoyed the challenging tasks. This has helped me to grow professionally. Now as the new opportunity in your organization is working on new technology, I would like to gain mastery over this new skill and progress ahead.”

6. Prefer shorter commute time to work

“I am having really great experience in the current organisation but the travel time towards office is more. As the new opportunity in your organisation is demanding fewer travel hours, I will be able to concentrate more on work. This will improve my productivity and I would like to go ahead and join the organisation.”

7. Need to maintain a work-life balance

“This job has been a great experience but due to challenging and demanding work hours, I am unable to maintain my work-life Balance. With shorter work hours, your opportunity looks promising to me, as I will be able to better maintain my work-life balance.”

Conclusion

There will never be one ready made best answer for your desired situation and opportunity.

To arrive at the best answer for reason for job change, look at what positives you have seen in your organisation and its correlation with the upcoming opportunity.

Try to capture the gaps new upcoming opportunity will fill in your career and life.

If you combine both the things you will have one decent good answer that will help you convince your Hiring Manager and will land you at the job.

Feel free to come up with suggestions and questions.

3. Internship
Do not do the internship because you need marks, Internship is basically to tune your skill set with industry standard , your current stream , your interest will also matter here. Try to do internship from reputed company.

Kamran Sayed
Here is a tip.As I am in web application and software field I would recommend.always try to develop something of your own. With respect to the job requirements. And bring it in your pendrive. It will really help us to figure out your talent and also give an impression that you have put your efforts regarding the technology.

Manish AdvaniI would like to offer my 2 cents worth of advise In addition to helping them get their first job if you could guide them in going for the right job it will help them in the long run at times due to immaturity youngsters go for the first opportunity which comes their way not realizing they are getting in to something which they dont love to do.

Gautam RoyFreshers should bridge the gap between academic and professional world. They should get hands on with real world projects, learn latest tech apart from what was taught in college. Internships are best way to do it however one can achieve that in his/her own capacity as well. Finally, if not the last, they should prepare themselves well for interviews and be ready to face any challenges.

Yuvraghi SharmaFreshers need to have industry exposure by having internships or training so that atleast they have some basic knowledge how to relate things what they have studied or are studying

Nishad PrabhuRelevant experience can always be gained over time. Many freshers lack  good communication skills and professional etiquettes, something that is essential across industries.

Anugrah Sharma
Here are some things you can do:
1. Provide a good Soft-Skills Training
2. Train in niche Technological Skills3. Help them with the Interview Preparation4. Put their profile in the right forum and give them on-job support.
Any industry today, whether it is catering to B2B or B2C is looking for support, not just service, so figure out how you can do that.

Shalini Bhattacharjee
They should 1.find out what domain they would be comfortable in, what are their strengths and weaknesseses
2.they should have in depth subject knowledge of that particular domain 3.please dig into some basic current affairs about your selected field so that when you talk to recruiter they know that you don't sound like an alien 4. Trust me nothing works better than rehearsing in front of mirrors, ask yourself all possible questions (technical and behavioral) and answer with confidence 5.confidence comes with practice and practice makes one perfect 6.be honest, don boast about self too much, remember person sitting in front of you must have seen 5000 like you so project your inner self only.
Freshers interview is always easier as recruiter expect only what have you studied and how confident you sound..keep searching for jobs everyday

Yashveer GurjarThey must at least be good enough in the field in which they graduated. For eg:If a person did Engineering in CS,then he must be very good in coding and should master at least one language in which he is proficient or has interest. He should also work on his communication skills to crack interviews. As a corporate  person, what I have experienced is that you should be good in whatever you do,people respect your knowledge and capabilities.

Vish KushwahaBy the time one reaches his/her final semester, he/she already has some idea about what they want to do after their degree. So what one can do is start working on practical aspects. Try to know what's going on presently in the field which you want to head. One important suggestion i want to give is don't settle for any job, try to get a job that is concerned with your core.
