How to negotiate for the best when making a move from your present employer ?

Welcome to my blog.

If you are having an offer and thinking .. "Is this is best offer or yet to get best "  , then this blog is for you. I will take you step by step for salary negotiation.

Q. What are salary negotiations ?
Salary negotiations involve discussing a job offer with a prospective employer to negotiate a salary and benefits package that’s in line with the market (and hopefully, that meets or exceeds your needs).

Getting Prepared for it.

1. Know Your Value.
If you’re going to get the pay you deserve, it’s crucial to know the going rate for your position in your specific industry and in your geographic area. You need to do online research to know the current market rate.

2. Take what you are getting.
Life should be driven by you ... you should not be driven by life.
Few people think that they will take whatever comes in their career journey. They do not say "NO" for any Job opening. This attitude is not good for you and your company. Most of the time, you may regret joining new company. You need to know what you want from your potential company.
Take what you want , define your career goal, define your salary expectation and then work on it. You will get what actually you want.

3. Pick the Top one.
List down the company and location where you are looking for job change. Location play a major role as you might be having dependencies like your partner's job, child schooling , transportation, Facilities , etc

4. Avoid the Salary Requirements Trap
people to say: "I completely understand why this is an important issue -- you're trying to determine who you want to continue in this process, and it doesn't make much sense to pursue candidates you aren't going to get. Secondly, I know that the tendency is for people to lowball their salary range, because they don't want to get out of the pool. My preference is to figure out, independent of these issues, the degree to which there is a good fit here and the extent to which I can bring value to this organization and the extent to which I'm going to be fulfilled and involved and committed to this position. I suggest we wait to have the salary conversation until you're prepared to make an offer."

5. Avoid throwing up your numbers
This one is tricky part, you want to get your desired salary but at the same time, you dont want to disclose your numbers. This will required a lot of research and you are the only best person who know your value. Evaluate yourself and may be fix a salary level where you can start negotiating.
During interview, you can always says "Industry Standard" but at the same time, you need to give a hint to recruiter that you can looking salary in that range.
Each company has their own standard and targets and each job rack is defined in certain salary range, make sure you are in that salary range before initiating the hiring process, otherwise it will be waste of effort from your side as well as their side.

6. Be willing to walk away or consider saying no
When a company release the salary breakup / offer , and it is not matching with your expectation, you can say "no" to them. Some better offer might be waiting for you. You can always take your time and use that offer to fast process the job process which you actually want.

7. Negotiating Benefits
Almost every job offer will have variable pay which usually paid annually. Based on the company and job position , requirement, urgency to fill that job rack .. there are multiple factor you need to consider and if you are in strong position, you can ask to convert that variable amount paid monthly.
Take  in-hand as much as you can take it. You can also negotiate for joining bonus , stocks, and other benefits. Make sure you are in good position to negotiate .. even if you are not, you can always ask for it.

8. Take your time.
Sometime all you need is TIME,  once offer is release to you , you can take your time to respond. Review the salary breakup/ Tax calculation and make sure you are in your desired salary range.

9. Stay away in discussion of your previous salary history
Your present compensation should not be depend on your last compensation , if that is the case then there could be issues. In India, HR always need your previous salary slips and they made offer based on that. You have right to refuse to forward your current salary slip, remember , this could be not legal to share the details. You can tell them that you will submit the salary slip once you join the company.
If this is required to process your offer letter, you can give the salary breakup and remove your company name and other information .. remember you have signed a NDA with present employer and you are not suppose to discussion anything about the present employer.

10. Stay Positive, Not Pushy
Negotiation may be scary, but you should always keep the conversation on a positive note

Hope I have shared enough details , one can go through and share your feedback.
Your feedback is important , as it will tell if you are going on right track or not, please do not hesitate to put your words in comment.
